So, what is it? Across Maryland, many communities are flooded in purple lights, encouraged by the Maryland Municipal League and the Herren Project, to promote awareness about opioid and substance abuse prevention. Some communities also use this month to raise awareness about suicide prevention.
On August 21st, the Council adopted a formal resolution to recognize each September as “University Park Goes Purple” in order to empower our community with resources and to educate our youth on these important issues. You will see banners and signs around town highlighting this month’s campaign and signs promoting the new, national 9-8-8 Suicide Help Line. If you or someone you know is combatting thoughts of suicide, this new 9-8-8 number (like 9-1-1) has resources to provide immediate help to people in crisis. Similarly, in Maryland, you can call 2-1-1 for mental help resources, including assistance combatting substance abuse. Show your support for these people we care about.
