For your information as a recipient of the Mayor's List and in case you don't directly receive the Chief's Blog - What's UP (University Park)?! I relay (below) a message from University Park Police Chief Harvey Baker--

Dear Community Members,

As you are probably aware, a shooting occurred two weeks ago in our community. The shooting resulted in the death of Miguel Utrera, a neighbor from Hyattsville. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends and to the Hyattsville/University Park community at large. We are all part of the fabric of the community and when a loss occurs, it affects everyone deeply. As the Chief of Police, I have made community policing and the Town’s wellbeing and safety my top priorities since my hire in 2019. We have attempted to be more transparent, responsive, and proactive while updating and leveraging technology to prevent one time or recurring crime issues that occur in the Town. Nonetheless, tragic events such as this can still occur anywhere and at any time. While it is inappropriate for me to discuss an on-going criminal investigation, just know that your response and assistance with this incident have helped tremendously and reminds us that we all must continue to be diligent in keeping our community safe. Together, we will continue to make the Town of University Park a wonderful place to live and visit. We are not going to allow the callous act of one person to affect the peace of mind of our community.
