Job Opportunity: Sergeant – University Park Police Department

The University Park Police Department is dedicated to serving the residents and visitors of the Town of University Park. We are guided by community policing principles and the pillars of the Presidential Report on 21st Century Policing. We are seeking a highly experienced, dedicated, and passionate law enforcement professional to join our team as a Sergeant.

The residents of University Park place a high value on public safety and pride themselves on working collaboratively with the police department to maintain a secure and welcoming community. This position offers a unique opportunity to lead and inspire while contributing to the safety and well-being of our town.

Duties and Responsibilities:

As a Sergeant, you will take on a leadership role within the department, with duties that include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervising and coordinating patrol activities to ensure effective law enforcement and community engagement.
  • Managing complex incident responses, ensuring proper documentation and follow-up.
  • Enforcing state laws and town ordinances in alignment with departmental policies.
  • Directing traffic, managing parking enforcement, and overseeing logistics for community and town events.
  • Conducting community outreach to build strong relationships with residents and visitors.
  • Collaborating with external agencies on investigations and joint initiatives.
  • Preparing detailed reports and maintaining accurate records.

Requisite Skills:

  • Strong leadership and supervisory abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for engaging with diverse communities.
  • Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills under pressure.
  • Proficiency in report writing and record-keeping.
  • Ability to collaborate with other agencies and adapt to dynamic situations.

Work Schedule:

  • 12-hour shifts, including days, nights, holidays, and rotating shifts, with every other weekend off.
  • Opportunities for overtime.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5–7 years of law enforcement or relevant experience.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator's license.
  • MPCTC Card in good standing or eligibility for certification through comparative compliance.
  • Supervisor or leadership certification.
  • High school diploma (associate degree preferred).
  • Police instructor certification and bilingual skills are highly encouraged.
  • Eligible for rehire from your most recent previous employer.
